What do you mean, "The money's all gone?"
The schedule says we're only halfway there but you've spent 90% of your budget. If this sounds familiar, it might be time to consider getting serious about cost tracking for your projects. This 2-part course by Carl Pritchard of Pritchard Management Associates provides an overview of the Earned Value approach to tracking project progress.

The first installment -- Getting Set -- focuses on laying the groundwork the team must have in place to capture and measure earned value. Because the foundation of Earned Value is a well-constructed Work Breakdown Structure, it's also a great introduction to what all this WBS lingo really means, and why it's important. If you can keep these principles in mind while laying out a work breakdown, you'll have better visibility into your projects even without Earned Value.

In part 2 -- Tracking and Reporting -- Carl gets into the practical details of Earned Value Management, including claiming work, reporting results, and, yes, the math. With simple examples and approachable language, Carl shows you how a criteria-based WBS can be used to assess the current state of a project, predict how future work might go on that project, and decide whether or not the effort required to meet the original goals is realistic. The result is bottom-line language that executives will love, assuming you use this intuitive, fact-based approach to reporting.
