What this is

Suggestions for how you can accelerate the development of skills and experience that are critical to expanding your project management career options.

Why it's useful

As you think about your project management career options, you might ask how you can go about gaining career-enhancing skills and experience without spending another 10 years to gain enough of them to matter. The answer is that while your ongoing project experience is very valuable, there are additional ways to gain invaluable knowledge and jump-start your career options. This guideline includes several pointers.

How to use it

For the skills and experience items listed in the left-hand column of the table, take stock of your personal situation. Do you have these skills in abundance already? You may want to get feedback from peers, managers, etc.

Think about where you want to go with your career. Which of these areas is important to those ambitions? For related reading, you can also download our presentation PM Powers: a Wealth of Career Options and How to be Ready which discusses all of these PM attributes and which are most important for various career options for PMs, such as working in a PMO, doing portfolio management, managing large and complex projects, etc.

Make a personal plan for further developing critical skills, using the table in this file for ideas and inspiration.

As you develop more capabilities and maturity, be sure to put it all to use on your current efforts, so you'll shine in the eyes of your customers in the company and be the one they think of calling for new opportunities.
