This is a significant update to the 1991 original edition (an almost instant hit), replacing almost half the contents with material considered by the authors to be more useful to the reader. Basic organization has not changed, but sections augmented include economic analysis (in Chapter 2), practical tools to accelerate the development process (throughout), as well as broadening and refining many topics like incremental innovation (Chapter 4), product specifications (Chapter 5) and risk management (Chapter 12).

Table of Contents:

  1. Faster and Still Faster
  2. Putting a Price Tag on Time
  3. The Fuzzy Front End
  4. The Power and Pitfalls of Incremental Innovation
  5. Capturing Customer Needs
  6. Using System Design to Compress Schedules
  7. Forming and Energizing the Team
  8. Organizing for Communication
  9. Designing Fast Development Processes
  10. Controlling the Process
  11. Preventing Overloads
  12. Managing Risk Proactively
  13. Bridging the R&D - Manufacturing Gap
  14. The Role of Top Management
  15. Making Changes Faster

The techniques discussed are based on interviews by the authors with actual product developers in companies who have tried and improved these techniques in the "real world." There is much practical experience here -- a generation of project managers have tried the 1991 lessons, learned from them and improved them.
