Importance of announcing project manager assignment

Why is it important to announce in some form who is managing a newly commissioned project?
Official announcement of a project's start and identification of the person in charge is a chance for executives to make a project commitment "real" and communicate the responsibility and authority they are giving to a project manager. Too many projects come into being as just something else to get done. The project manager's job should be made easier by everyone understanding that someone at the top thinks this project is worth doing and has put this person in charge to get it done!

Our sample Project Manager Appointment Letter announces the project and the project manager's appointment and makes explicit statements about the project manager's authority; that the team members working in different functional departments are responsible for delivering results according to the project schedule, costs, and deliverables; and that the sponsor is fully behind the project.

Have an executive sponsor publish such a letter once a project concept has been approved and the project is starting its Initiation Phase, so that from the beginning the project, the project manager, and all required team member activities are more likely to be treated with respect. Publish the letter to functional managers and team members and stakeholders of the project.
