Burning Questions on Scheduling, Estimating & Budgeting

Scheduling and Estimating is the process of turning a well-formed project vision into a complete and integrated statement of the work and its duration and resource needs over time. Estimating work and managing schedules is a project management core competency. It is also a primary source of conflict in project management.

Burning Questions

  1. What do I do if team members are saying they can't create a good schedule, because the work is too uncertain to estimate accurately?
  2. Should I spend a lot of time developing an early detailed schedule?
  1. How do we come up with good time estimates for all the different tasks in our project schedule?
  1. What different approaches can I use to come up with a thorough budget for my project, including people and other expenses?
  2. I'm new to project budgeting and not sure what are all the potential items I need to account for?

Problem Solvers

  1. One of my team members is saying they can't commit to any of the schedule dates, so obviously my plan isn't going to mean much!
  2. I need schedule input from a particular individual, and they just won't provide it. How am I supposed to get a complete plan if people refuse to provide their part of the schedule?
  3. I have a conflict between the deadline the executives want this project to hit and what the team says is possible. How do I resolve this?
